Lookout Mountain Tennessee

Lookout Mountain is the gorgeous home of three Chattanooga attractions: Rock City, Ruby Falls, and the exciting Incline Railway, the steepest passenger train in the world, known as "America's most amazing mile!" Take a ride to the top of the mountain for the finest view of Chattanooga Valley available. While you're up there, be sure to try the homemade fudge, explore the site of the Civil War "Battle Above The Clouds," and stop by the Visitor Center for a map of Point Park's hiking trails.

Civil War

Lookout Mountain was a key battleground during the Civil War, at which the Union suffered major losses, only to turn the tables on the rebels in the "Battle Above The Clouds."


How steep is the railway incline?

The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway is the steepest passenger train in the world, at a breathtaking 72.7% grade incline.

Why does the fog descend from the top to the valley?

The unique shape and location of Lookout Mountain causes low clouds to move from the top of the mountain, where it's cooler, toward the warmer Valley below, only to stop in the middle and turn to fog.
